NZPaul got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Help us get school kids excited about tech careers! Fun and funky
Check out NZPaul's Web page design contest…
TechHub is a service offered by the Institute of IT Professionals NZ (the professional body for the IT industry in New Zealand), designed to introduce school students to the exciting opportunities of a career in software or IT. The project is funded by the tech industry in NZ. As part of the overall service, IT professionals do presentations in schools across New Zealand about their career in IT. The site is intended to provide follow-up information. The target audience for the site is 9-16 year old children (70% of focus), their parents (25%) and funders (5%) who want to find out more about a career in IT. As well as general info, the website will include details of qualifications available in IT, as well as profiles of people working in various IT roles (including videos) and a place where schools and presenters can sign up to be involved. Note that the existing website (listed below) outlines the project (it is being rebranded from ICT-Connect to TechHub), however the new site is NOT intended to be the same - the new site is a portal for students and parents, whereas the existing site is for presenters and schools.
We're looking for a fun and funky site, visually appealing to a younger demographic while also maintaining enough of a professional feel to not scare off parents. Can you build a site that's engaging for kids - will keep them looking around, and catch their imagination? We've had the TechHub logo created, and four branded "super heroes" that are to feature in the site design (all uploaded below). "Trixie" is the one to feature most prominently on the site. We also have them in other poses.
Homepage: This is the page to catch people's attention. It needs something catchy (words and imagery) that portrays the brand values (fun, funky, interesting, entertaining), provides some basic info, and presents the navigation options really clearly. The navigation elements are: * Home * Why get into IT? * Roles in IT * What to study * Stats for parents * About TechHub * Contact Us We also need fairly prominent links for: * Information for Schools * Sign up to present in schools We would envision a "Featured role" somewhere prominent, with a picture linking through to the Roles pages. We also need to feature the sponsors on this page somewhere, probably near the bottom. See bottom of www.ictconnect.org.nz for the main sponsors. Roles in IT Page: [EDITED] Here is a better brief for the Roles in IT Page: Essentially we will have around 12-15 IT roles, such as "Software Developer", "Technician", "Architect", "IT Project Manager" etc. Each role will have a profile of at least one person working in that role - including a photo and in many cases, a video. We will need an index page, but the page we're most interested in for this design is the individual page for a particular role. So this will need: Information about the role, eg: * The role name (prominent) * sub-line with other names for the role (ie "Also known as xxx, yyy, zzz") Role info (I've uploaded a PDF example of the info we will be presenting for each). Video of someone talking about the role, eg "Software Architect John Smith talks about his role" and the video Ideally we would also have the list of other roles down the left-hand (or right-hand) side, so they can easily click between roles to read the info. Does this all make sense? Let me know if not.
What to avoid
Keen to see what you come up with!
We have ongoing design needs, so would hope to establish a longer-term relationship with the designer that best "gets" what we're trying to do, and comes up with something special. We will also pay a contribution to finalist runners-up that have put in some good work on this, to help compensate for your time.
