Comaxx got their new web page design by running a design contest:
Create modern website for high-tech chip design firm
Check out Comaxx's Web page design contest…
Catena is multi-national high-tech firm specializing in the design & development of chips that are used in all kinds of electronic devices. A few examples are: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips that are used in smartphones and FM-receiver chips used in car stereos. The target audience are managers and engineers that work at large electronics manufacturing companies, but the website also needs to cater to engineers who are looking for a job and want to work at Catena.
We already have an existing brand, and do not wish to change that. So the logo, and primary colors are fixed. The colors used in the logo are: red (PANTONE 186) and black. For supporting colors we prefer colors that are between red and blue on the color wheel, as those match our brand personality best (the Sage, Magician and Explorer brand personality archetypes). You are free to create the style for the website and choose supporting colors, keeping these restrictions in mind. We also want to give a few pointers / keywords regarding the style: - Modern, flat design - Clean typograhpy - Make use of white-space to make the website flow better - The website should visually appealing and have a high-tech appearance (mainly by using photos) - For photographs: we plan to use a combination of self-made photos (a photographer will be making photos in and around our offices within the next few weeks) and stock photos. Keep in mind we want to the photos to create a mood that is high-tech but also human/personal. We think the best way to do this is use photos that combine people and high-tech environments.
1. HOMEPAGE Based on the sitemap I also drew a wireframe (sketch) for the homepage. I purposely left a lot of room for large visuals on the homepage, because I want the visitor to immediately see that Catena is a high-tech company. I envision photographs inside a clean-room, a close-up of a chip, or perhaps even a chip layout drawing. Setting the right mood is crucial, these kinds of photographs do that very well. Furthermore, the homepage is basically a short summary of the entire website. It contains a short introduction, the Services and Solutions, latest blog posts, and vacancies. 2. GENERIC SUBPAGE / STYLE GUIDE We will have a number of generic subpages containing more detailed information about our services, company, etc. We would like to have a generic subpage template (or rather a sort of styleguide) that allows us to tell a story using text, photos and video. Please design one generic subpage layout, containing the following elements: - Ability to define “rows” or “areas” in the page to visually separate content - Ability to use large photos to set a mood, and break content flow - Headings (H1 to H5) - Call-to-action buttons with space for an icon and text label, in 2 different colors - Contact form (name, company, email address, message, and a submit button) - Bullet list - Numbered list - Button for downloading a whitepaper - Photo contained with a paragraph of text
What to avoid
We want to move away from our current website design, because it’s very outdated. Please do not use our current website for inspiration. We do not want any "boring" pages with a lot of text. All pages should feel fresh, and present the message clearly. In the content production we will take great care to stick to the essentials, but we need a design that caters to this as well. We also do not want the website to become crowded with content, or have sliding photos all over the place.
* If you use any licensed elements (fonts, images, etc.) please let us know upfront. Especially for fonts please only use fonts that have a webfont license available for purchase or are free to use. * The website will be responsive. We only expect you to design the desktop pages in this contest, but please keep this in mind when designing.
