We teach programming. Students tend to be intimidated by coding and afraid to break things. We want it to be as playful as a squishy ball in their hands.
Technology is seen as masculine, fragile, cold, distant, confusing, abstract, serious, complicated, and logical.
We want to be feminine, playful, warm, inviting, clear, tactile, fun, simple, and emotional.
Normal schools: Most places are professional and students compete against one another. Things are serious with a lot at stake. Teachers wear ties and are in business attire.
Our school: We are easy going and teach wearing shorts and a t-shirt. We (students and teachers) sometimes bring dogs to run around the class. We are closer to family than competitors and have a culture of helping others. We encourage mistakes and make them public because we have self deprecating humor. The last event we did together was watch Mexican wrestling.
