evanUW got their new app design by running a design contest:
Design iOS mobile application pages for social food start up
Check out evanUW's App design contest…
Our app is a social platform that shares a user's restaurant orders with their network. And gives a user the ability to view their friend's food orders on a timeline.
We want the app design to be sharp and clean, a very easy, simple, and friendly UI. We like the color scheme of white, and blueish green color; however, we are completely open to the designer's creative freedom.
See attached images for wire frames referencing the below: (the 4 screens we want created are the 4 screens in the pdf attached). Screen 1 (image 1): Timeline.. this will function as the users homepage of the app. It shows food orders placed recently but the user's friends. This is a scrollable timeline. We want the app's menu button top left (shown by three stacked lines). The bar at the top middle is used to filter the feed below with three sections: Global, Following, Me. Side note: ignore the "friends feed" button shown in the drawings. Top right is a button that will flip to the active maps screen (snap maps-esque page). Within each timeline entry, the friend's name and restaurant will be navigational links to bring users to the respective page. Users should also be able to click, like, and comment on each of the posts. Additionally, if a user frequently orders from a restaurant that order should stand out in some way from the others in the feed (we will leave that creativity to the designer). Screen 2 (Image 2): This map layout shows friend's orders in a surrounding area. We want to incorporate a heat map function that designates areas of high food order volumes. We have not shown it on the map, but in image 2, we need to create a popup when you click on a friend in the map to see their recent order/restaurant name. Screen 3 (image 4): This is a restaurant's profile page. Key functionality is to display the restaurant and its details. Important: restaurant details, genre of food, order buttons to reroute user to delivery apps, feed of friends that have ordered from displayed restaurant along with an in app message button for each friend. (note the bar at the top of the screen is the same bar as screen 1) Screen 4 (image 5): This a personal profile page where a user can view their profile. A user reaches this page by pressing the "me" tab on the top bar. The main functionality on this page is to show a user's order history and the ability to approve/remove individual orders to the timeline. Users will also be able to comment on each order in their history. "Stats" button will show user's statistics regarding their order history (on a separate page developed later)
What to avoid
We drew out detailed wire frames of the pages to clearly display the app's functionality; however, we would like to see uniqueness and creativity in the designs. Do not make the screens exactly like the apps we suggested to follow (venmo, snapmaps, spotify, etc.)

And then… they selected a winner!
I chose to wait and review Shweta only once our design was complete. I had a general idea of what I wanted and Shweta was able to make it come to life. She followed my instructions well and provided multiple design iterations until I was fully satisfied. Currently, Shweta is working with my developer to implement our design. Great work. Timely. Creative. And easy to communicate with.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
