A better diffing tool
Check out pascal W's App design contest…
What industry do you think your business is most related to?
1.1. What does the business do · We create software for business/financial analysts. People who are tasked with understanding large amounts of data and are often faced with doing repetitive tasks simply because the tools out there don’t target efficiency. In this case, we’re developing a tool to compare files (spreadsheets such as financial data or account lists), such that if an analyst needed to compare financial numbers from 2 different systems to highlight any and all differences in the most efficient manner possible 1.2. Target audience · The target audience is going to be business analysts in the corporate market (banks, consulting firms, etc.). Someone who will be spending lots of time in front of a computer (frequently Windows-based PC) and dealing with spreadsheets all day 1.3. Objective · Spreadsheets are great and infinitely flexible, but that flexibility comes at the cost of inefficiency and risk of errors. Our software takes a situation, which happens frequently (file comparison), reduces it to the most common attributes, and makes it such that the analyst doesn’t need to spend time entering in repetitive formulas or dealing with complex, hacked together macros that can’t be supported. · The app is a cross platform (Mac/PC) file comparison tool focusing on spreadsheets, which stresses simplicity and ease of use. Our main competitor is Beyond Compare (http://www.scootersoftware.com/) although we have a more streamlined focus on what our target audience looks at. As such, we want the UI to be as clean and easy to use for those core components. · You can find demo videos, a usable demo (for Mac and Windows) and sample files here (very early stages of development): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/404vnivh7mn46og/AACD8w7D4ApbHlLaunZvTHZra?dl=0
2.1. Brand Personality · As we are targeting the corporate market, the personality of the brand needs to be clean, clear, trustable/quality, utilitarian but pleasant to use. That being said, our mission is to get people to work more efficiently and spend time working on the actual hard work that requires a high degree of focus. File comparison for example, is a relatively brain dead thing. Why do they need to spend all their time doing it? · Our users aren’t going to have a lot of time on their hands. Flashy animations or playful fonts will turn them away. Animations don’t need to be avoided, but they need to be short and informational. Fonts should be clear and easy to read. · When thinking of icons, and fonts, please ensure they aren’t tailored to a specific OS’s design guideline, as this app is cross platform. 2.2. Aesthetic · While I am a mac fan and hate spreadsheets, my target audience lives by Excel. Things need to stick to the somewhat serious level. Goofy or bubbly icons should be avoided. The current trend is for a flatter design. This app should look modern so a flat design is certainly what we have in our mind, though we are flexible and not tied to that.
Daff, Dapper, ... Name is still pending
Main workflow is that people will select 2 CSV files, describe how they want the rows to be matched, and describe which columns they want to compare and how they are to be compared. Screen 1: main presentation screen/results Screen 2: define how to match the rows Screen 3: define which columns to compare
What to avoid
Please see the attached image "bad-design.jpg". There are a few concepts I want to avoid.
