Our school will be in Heidelberg and Karlsruhe.
Data science – the science of computationally extracting knowledge or insights from data in order to solvechallenging problems facing science and society – is widely regarded as a key technology of the 21st century. Ithas pivotal importance to health research and the future of healthcare. The aim of the Helmholtz Information& Data Science School for Health (HIDSS4Health) is to attract, promote and train the best young talentsat the interface between data science and health-related applications. HIDSS4Health offers a structureddoctoral training program embedded in a highly interdisciplinary research environment bringing togetherexperts from the data and life sciences. The scientific curriculum is complemented by training measures thatprovide doctoral researchers with the key qualifications expected from future leaders in science and industry.Within HIDSS4Health, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the German Cancer Research Center(DKFZ), and the Heidelberg University (UHEI) join competencies in data as well as life sciences. A team of37 research groups with a unique spectrum of expertise provides an optimal starting point to tackle some ofthe grand challenges in health, specifically focusing on three research areas: Imaging & Diagnostics, Surgery& Intervention 4.0 and Models for Personalized Medicine. Within these areas, we will address a key problemin healthcare today: how (and which) huge data sets generated from large-scale devices and infrastructurecan be used by data-driven and machine learning methods. Common data science challenges like uncertaintyawareness, personalization, interpretability and scalability will be addressed to gain new insights not possibleso far. The school will generate synergy effects within Helmholtz through collaboration of today’s and futureresearch fields (Key Technologies/Information & Health), programs (Cancer Research, BIFTM: BioInterfacesin Technology and Medicine, STN: Science and Technology of Nanosystems, SBD: Supercomputing & BigData), centers, graduate schools, and national and international partners in science and industry
