A logo for a research consortium. The final objective of this research project is to develop a virtual simulation methodology for the optimization of industrial processes or products that have lots of "uncertainties". The methodology will enable to achieve an optimized virtual design that is as insensitive as possible to parameter fluctuations, manufacturing tolerances, etc. The focus of the project is on flow related industrial processes, where a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is used as prediction tool. Such processes are the basis of many industrial applications related to energy production, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), automotive, and aeronautics.

A typical case we find in the development of safer tires that are more resistant to aquaplaning Thanks to state-of- the-art software, complex interactions between the tire, the road and the water can already being simulated on computer. In this way one obtains much faster insight, thus avoiding time-consuming and expensive testing. However, there are numerous variations and uncertainties that affect the performance of the tire. What is the state of the road? The amount of water on the road surface ? The temperature ? The wear rate of the tires? Until today, we can not take these uncertainties in the simulations, however , they can influence the result significantly.
