Blip is a startup software company with a platform for large companies who have a distributed workforce (employees spread over a large geographic area). Blip will empower employees at every level to access key information that will help them maximize their performance. Blip is also about sharing information within an organization and creating meaningful relationships with co-workers in other geographic locations.
Blip will also allow more experienced employees to mentor younger employees.
Finally, it will allow for streamlined succession planning so senior leaders who are looking at retirement in the next 5 years can identify their protege and begin an active transition program so their departure does not hurt the firm.
The blip icon needs to be something very simple but with enough uniqueness that it is not just a copy of someone else's icon. It needs to look good by itself for the logo's sake but the blip icon will also be used in the software interface we are designing. Every employee will have a blip that will appear on the screen in various forms. For example, one screen will show all sales employees represented by a blip. Their Blip will be a different color or placed lower or higher on the screen depending on their performance. Administrators can then adjust the view to look at a more specific group of employees (blips) or a broader group of blips.
So in short, the blip needs to look great as a logo but needs to look nice if there are 500 small versions of it spread across the screen.
I think of the google map icon (teardrop) as a good example of a simple icon. I think it should probably have smooth edges but I'm willing to look at some options with rough edges if the designer thinks that will work.
