Story to tell in the infographic
We would like to develop a graphic that walks people through the process that we use to capture, analyze, synthesize, share and apply the data that we collect for growers. The graphic needs to illustrate the different technologies used in our process and the role that they play in developing the resultant data in a very interesting and easy to understand way. We want the designers to feel free to use their creativity to make this process accessible to a very broad audience of varied background and education. To simplify the information that I provided above I thought I would break this down into the five principle steps as I see them. Step 1 – In the grove or orchard doing data collection of 3d laser data, 360 photography and imaging. This should show ground and air collection, base station and satellites overhead. Step 2 – Measuring the data that we have collected to get the metrics Step 3 – Analyze the data after it is measured and distilled down to usable information Step 4 – Disseminate the information in the form of spreadsheets, reports and web portal Step 5 – Return to the orchard or grove and use the information as a base map for GPS guidance while running an airblast sprayer as illustrated in the video provided.
Data to include in the infographic
Data Collection (capture) – A vehicle mounted with a scanner array is driven between tree lines of orchards and groves at low speed, accessing real-time data such as tree trunk diameter, the height of trees, the volume of trees, and the leaf density of trees. Various types of imagery including multispectral, hyperspectral and thermal data is also compiled, capturing details such as leaf color, species/sub-species, health of the plant, number of blossoms and fruits on a tree. Data types – 3d point cloud – millions of points are located by laser and GPS in three dimensional space creating a virtual representation of every object in the orchard, grove or vineyard. These points are measurable and used to extract all dimensional metrics. Spectral image – a hyperspectral image is very much like a fingerprint in that it each organic has a completely unique signature. This signature does change in an organic when stress is present. Drought, disease and injury are all forms of stress. Hyperspectral can also be used to identify species and sub species. The difference between RGB, multispectral and hyperspectral images is the number of bands. Data synthesis (synthesize) – Once the data is extracted we can then begin to make assessments about crops such as health and productivity. This is done by layering the different data types and merging them into a single dataset. This melded data combines tabular data, vector graphics and imagery data. Data sharing (share) – Data is made available to the growers in a variety of formats to include GIS shape files, CSV Files, and sql compliant database, The database files are accessible via a secure web portal. Data application (apply) – One of the ways that the data is used is as a base map for GPS guidance in precision agriculture. We load modified data into a Precision Ag control console to act as a guidance and application system for herbicides, pesticides and other applications.
Elements to include in the infographic
We need to graphically represent all of the steps that are carried out in the process of developing information for the growers. This needs to walk the growers through the process step by step so they can easily understand what we do and how we do it. This would involve illustrating equipment, processes and ideas.
