andyeb got their new icon or button by running a design contest:
App icon for mind mapping app
Check out andyeb's Icon or button contest…
iBlueSky is an elegant and intuitive mind mapping app for iOS. It is used by business people, strategists, students and innovators.
What's your vision?
BACKGROUND iBlueSky launched soon after the App Store did and has had the same icon since then. The app is currently hidden on the App Store, while I update the UI for iOS 7 & 8. It needs a new icon which fits with the new look and feel on iOS 7/8. GOALS & OBJECTIVES Here is a summary of what I would like the new app icon to achieve (in approximate order of importance, from most important to least important): 1. Be eye-catching – the app icon will be competing for attention in an overcrowded App Store. High contrast, simple & bold designs are key. 2. Convey something of what the app does - capturing, developing & organising ideas. 3. Ideally be recognizable as an evolution of the original icon 4. Look consistent with the updated (largely blue) user interface 5. Look consistent in style with the built-in app icons in iOS 7/8 6. Look modern, fresh and professional 7. Look good on both light and dark backgrounds 8. Not look too similar to competing apps (see Appendix in Design Brief) OTHER KEY REQUIREMENTS Follow Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines for icons: https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/UserExperienc e/Conceptual/MobileHIG/AppIcons.html • The app icon should not contain any text, including the app name • The app icon must be opaque without transparent elements or areas • The app icon must be original and not infringe copyrights CONCEPTS & DIRECTION - iBlueSky is about ideas, brainstorming, bigger-picture-thinking and “blue sky” thinking. I’d like this to be carried through to the app icon. - Pictures of brains make some people (including myself) feel queasy and I’m not keen on representations involving the human head. - Simple, clean & elegant is good. Too much fine detail and clutter is not. Please see the attached PDF brief for more background and additional information and insight. Happy to try and answer any questions you may have and to work with you to produce something we are both proud of.
Please see the attached design brief in PDF format which outlines in some detail what I am looking for. I have attached the existing (rather outdated) icon - I'm looking for a major refresh or, even better, something more radical which just has a hint of the old icon - perhaps just enough for existing users to recognise on their home screens. I particularly like submissions which use this App Icon template: http://appicontemplate.com/ios8 (or similar) as this allows me to quickly evaluate the effectiveness of the icon at all sizes and in several use cases.

It all began with a design brief.
