I would like a cover design for my book (front and back), "Make IT Matter: Using Stories to Give Your Digital Transformation Wings " by Patricia McMillan
The key message of the book is that in order to lead their organisations in digital transformation, Chief Information Officers and their IT teams need to drop the tech speak and focus on more human-centred skills. They need to build trust, understand their customers, communicate the big picture, and inspire meaningful change. Stories are an amazing tool for helping CIOs and their teams to gain these skills.
"Make IT Matter" is a deliberate ambiguity. It can be read as "make IT matter" or as "make it matter"
But the most important word in the title is "transformation." Transforming the organisation, transforming the way IT engages and communicates with the organisation, transforming the way IT thinks about themselves and their role. Stories provide the meaning and depth to allow them to do this.
For the cover I'd like something clean and fairly simple, something that evokes the idea of a marvellous transformation from the drab and boring to the rich and meaningful. A dragonfly would be a good symbol, but I'm open to ideas.
Why a dragonfly rather than a butterfly? A couple of reasons. One is that the dragonfly symbolism is a better match. Dragonflies are symbols of change and agility because of the many ways they can move. The way they move across the water is also a symbol for looking beneath the surface to find a deeper meaning. And it's said they used to be dragons, which from a storytelling perspective is kind of cool. The other big reason is that butterflies have a more feminine feel, which doesn't work for my IT market. I love seeing your creative ideas, and it certainly doesn't need to be a dragonfly, but butterflies are not going to work.
